OpenOffice - Free Microsoft Office Like Program

As a student, I have to write papers, make presentations, and do stuff like that, so I need an office suite like Microsoft Office to work with. But it's pretty expensive, especially for a poor student like me. That's why I love OpenOffice. It's completely free, and allows you to create documents, presentations, and spreadsheets that are compatible with Microsoft Office. It's not dumbed down at all, and actually includes some pretty advanced features. You can even open Microsoft Office files with it (except for the latest Office 2007 edition files). If you want to save some cash, check out OpenOffice.

This morning, while pulling an all-nighter doing a lab report, I discovered some unfortunate effects with Open Office. Last week, I did a required section of the report in office writer or whatever, and converted it to pdf. In the process, however, it turned all of the numbers into some sort of arabic-esque code. I sent this to my TA unwittingly, which must have made me look like a total fool, because he didn't mention it to me and will probably give me a zero for the section. This, to put it lightly, is a student's worst nightmare. I also almost had to redo the entire table from scratch IN ADDITION to the rest of my lab report because of this problem. Luckily, i had an old version saved, so most of the work was recoverable, but I learned my lesson. Open Office is a great idea, but i've had multiple problems with all of the wings of it that I use (power point, text, spreadsheet). If you really don't want to pay exorbitant fees for the new office, use an old one, but I cannot recommend open office anymore.

Aw, Jason, that stinks. Personally, I've never had anything that bad (or anything bad, really) when using Open Office. However, if you or any other students are looking for a copy of Microsoft Office for cheap, check this out: http://aaronstake.blogspot.com/2007/11/ultimate-steal-ms-office-2007-cheap-for.html
